The Power of the Mayor

By Frances Bryce, February 20, 2020 — The mayor of my hometown also owned a plant that contained a cotton gin, a place the cotton crop was brought to be weighed and processed. Seeds from the cotton were converted to oil and the cotton was processed and baled to be sold to the manufacturer for the market for many products that were made from cotton.
My father was employed in the cotton gin factory. He kept [up] the machine that separated the seeds from the cotton. The mayor used the employees for whatever he wanted them to do other than the job they were hired to do which included any job at his house that they had skills to do. Errands, lawn work, even painting his house. My father could and did fill almost any skill that was needed. Electrical work — he could fix almost anything.
He talked about one thing that the Mayor did that was illegal, stealing cotton from the owners of their cotton that was brought in to be processed. He had the workers to remove from each load so that he had cotton to sell. Money made from the owners for processing their product and enriching himself by stealing a portion of each owner’s product. The fact seems to be for some, there is more to be achieved by cheating.
