The Mailman Who Delivered More Than Mail

By Frances Bryce, February 11, 2021 — [In] my early years of marriage when we had one daughter and only one car, and the arrangement was made that I would get the car one day that my husband was able to go in a ride with someone else. I’m not sure who made the arrangement, but I’m sure one day a week wasn’t my idea. My day off included food shopping, medical appointments, dropping my child off at preschool, et cetera, et cetera.

I also worked. One day as I was running late [because] my daughter was not interested in my timeline, I was in a state of agitation as I closed the door. The mailman was approaching my home. He saw the facial frustration, and after greeting me, he offered a statement that I never forgot. He said, “I know you may find it difficult to believe, but one day sooner than you can imagine, she will grow up and you will only see the spirit only as a small step in your life.”

My whole body relaxed as I thanked him for his sage advice. I never forgot the observation, and I soon learned how true that statement was indeed. A mailman who delivered for me more than the mail.
