The Homegoing

Last Friday (March 26, 2016), my family laid to rest the last living relative on my mother’s side of the family. That person was my Aunt Dilsey, age 91 ½ years old. Aunt Dilsey was the 10th child of a family of 10. Her birthday would have been April 2nd.

My aunt had been sick since 2003. After being a beautician and hair stylist for 18 years, rheumatoid arthritis began to set itself in her hands and feet. She was no longer able to hold the different tools used in styling hair and she retired. She moved in with one of her sons and became active in her church, Second Baptist Church of Elgin. She served faithfully on the Mother’s Board until it really became difficult for her to walk (so she stopped attending church).

In 2007, the son she was living with relocated to Mississippi, so she went to live with her other son in Roselle. In 2012, Auntie had a fall and decided it was time to go into a nursing home after she convinced her son that it was the right thing to do since she could no longer care for herself.

In it all, the moving from one son to another, her church stayed in touch with her. Someone came to visit with her, brought her communion, and prayed with her every first Sunday of each month. She was well loved by her church members and loved them as well.

The day of her homegoing was very bright and sunshiny as thou God was indeed saying, “You’ve earned your rest, my good and faithful servant. Well done.”
