The Great Salt Lake

By Jim Colter (husband of Glenda), August 18, 2014 — Right after we were married, we started on a trip from Texas to California. We were going to cross the Great Salt Lake in Utah, but not during the day, getting to the beginning edge of it at dusk. After getting something to eat and fueling up, we drove all night, getting to the other side, the crest, as the sun was coming up. We stopped to stretch and have a look at what we had driven across during the night. We could see about 30 miles of nothing but flat desert with a ribbon across it with two cars coming towards us.

We stood in awe of the size and desolation of the Great Salt Lake. We could see the other side but it was so far away as to almost be obscured by the desert light. What we thought strange was those two cars coming towards us. You could tell by their dust trails that they were moving fast but after watching them for about 20 minutes, they never seemed to get any closer, the lake was THAT big!
