The Evil Basement

By Carol Miller, October 15, 2019  — Growing up in a small townhouse in Philadelphia certainly had its perks. We were within walking distance to most things in our neighborhood and could easily play with the other kids on the block.
There is one thing about that house I will never forget though…the dreaded basement. What do I mean by that? Well, the basement was home to a coal-burning oven that heated the house. That coal burning would make insanely loud roars that freaked me out as a kid. Especially when my dad would shovel the coal in the middle of the night.
However, the best thing about it every Sunday, or holiday when we would have family over for dinner or a party. All the refreshments were down in the basement, more specifically Champs Soda, which came in a myriad of flavors that were all so good. When Champs was available my sister and I would instantly become so brave and go down to the basement with ease.
