The Day We Met

By Eleanor Johansson, November 1, 2019 — I first met [my husband] my senior year of high school when I started working at the Shoprite near my house. I was working as a cashier and I remember the first day he came in, I accidentally rung up the loaf of bread he got twice. He didn’t realize until he got to his car but he came all the way back in to say I charged him twice for his twenty-cent loaf of bread. At first, I thought he was obnoxious for doing that, but he later told me he only did it so he had a reason to talk to me again. After that, he would come in almost every day when he got off work at 5 o’clock and come to my cashier line. The first couple of times I saw him after that, he would bring up the bread incident and we’d laugh about it until one day he built up enough courage to ask me on a date.

I initially said no because I didn’t think he was my type but he didn’t let that discourage him. Every day he would come in and joke about how he got rejected by the “cute cashier” at Shoprite. I eventually gave in and told him I’d go out with him one time and that was it. For our first date, he brought me to dinner and then to the drive-in which I thought was really cheesy but I ended up having a great time. That night I couldn’t fall asleep because of how giddy I felt and that made me realize how much I actually liked him. We started dating and soon enough I knew he would be the guy I was going to marry. After that, every year on our anniversary he would get me a loaf of bread as one of my gifts.
