The Best Saturdays Ever: Funnies and Cartoons

By Denise W., March 4, 2021 — In the late ’50s and early ’60s, I was a rambunctious little girl who embraced much unconditional love. Yes, I was a little princess in our castle. Saturdays represented F-U-N which stands for freedom, unlimited, and nonchalant. There was no homework on the weekends. While [other] children did Saturday morning chores, I was exempt from duty. Why? My mother was a perfectionist who worked as a housekeeper. She was sought-after by elite clients because she possessed great organizational cleaning skills. She did not permit anyone in the castle to clean, after all, she was meticulous; the Queen of Decluttering. She abhorred clutter.

So, on Saturday morning, I waited for the Abbot milk van to deliver bottles of milk, freshly squeezed orange juice, or grape juice. I quickly turned on our small television to watch Hanna Barbera cartoons. My favorites were Quick-Draw McGraw and [his] sidekick Baba Looey, The Flintstones, the Jetsons, Yogi Bear, Casper, and my favorite cartoon of all – Top Cat. Top Cat was a manipulative street cat and a schemer, but it was in the name of survival so he was a likable character. During the day, there were no cartoon channels, so Saturday was especially fun, awesome, and something to look forward to. Oh, how I enjoyed Saturdays.
