Story for Dornsife Center

By Joyce Woods, May 16, 2019 — Ten years ago after thyroid cancer surgery, I felt very low. I began taking walks with my husband and our dog, Go-Gough to pass the time away and to forget my troubles.

When traveling through the streets of northwest Philadelphia in Germantown, I would see an Obama campaign office with a large sign saying “Register to Vote.”
Roosevelt and I headed to Burger King which was located across the street from the Registration office with our dog outside while we sipped on hot tea and coffee.

Quickly, I recognized a pattern in the people entering the building while entering and exiting the campaign office.
It seemed to bother me these people were taking such a long period of time to leave this building. I would say to my husband, “Roosevelt, what could people possibly be doing to take such a tremendous amount of time coming out over there just to register?” I was already registered so I didn’t see the need to go in and didn’t take me but a couple of minutes.
