Some Days of Old Worth Revisiting

By Frances Bryce, October 31, 2019 — The daily occurrence of undesirable behavior of young teenagers and young adults seems to overshadow that age group with what Miss Manners and Emily Post was the mainstay in days past.

Recently, two young girls entered in front of the person holding the door, no “Excuse me” or it seemed to me never a thought that the person who opened the door had the right to exit first. [I also remember] a bus scene where a grandparent with a child in her arms struggled to lodge a child carrier from where it was standing. A young man gave no assistance as she struggled to remove the stroller, [then] two women went to help her. I wondered why the young man gave no assistance. Was he apathetic or just not aware as a person to offer help?
The seats on a bus designated for seniors or people with disabilities [are] often occupied by teenagers while adults stand.

I do not ignore the young people who have offered their seats to me, hold doors, or [do] other acts of kindness. Still, I wonder, “Where have all manners gone, that existed long time ago?”
