Simple Happiness

By Emma Marano, November 16, 2019 — … My parents owned a farm and there was a lot of land, a lot of land. There was an old man there that used to talk to me and the other kids in our small town, he joked … He [could] make crazy things, surprising, like magic tricks. Me and my brothers used to go to the bakery where he was and he give us candy and does tricks. I used to wait for Olga, [my best friend] to get out of school, you know I stop going to school in second grade [when] my mother broke her leg and [got] very sick. I took care of my brothers. Me and Olga went with my brothers to this man and he very funny, very nice. He used candy [in his magic tricks]. He made the candy fresh, they were like taffy. He gave them for free. I couldn’t afford candy, and I was always busy, busy, busy cleaning cooking and taking care of my brothers, but this man he was nice.
