Names

By Gus Bloom, April 20, 2017 — When I was in school, there was a plethora of popular names.  But not in my case.  My mother had a penchant for unusual names so instead of being given the name of say Bernice or Stella she reached into her book of saints lives and pulled out St. Augustine, feminizing, of course, to Augusta.  I was born in August.  She had previously named my older brother Fabian and when my younger brother came along she named him Gaudentas.  Fabian and I continue to use the names she had selected but my younger brother could not keep the name of Gaudentas and had it changed to Gordon at least keeping the letter G in his name.  I have seldom come across another Augusta and I don’t object to it any more especially as most people now-a-days call me Gus.
