My Move to America

By Ramon Vazquez, April 13, 2019 — I was born in the countryside of Puerto Rico. I grew up with two brothers and one sister on a farm. When I was a young boy, I helped my father with upkeep and was always working to help the family make money. Eventually, I met a young girl who I fell in love with. When I was about 20 years old, she decided to move to America for work. Because I loved her and always wanted a better life for myself and my family, I decided to follow her to America and get a job so I could send money back to my family. When I got to America, the work was tough. I spent most of my days either working in the fields or working in factories. The conditions were really poor and very dangerous, but I knew I quitting wasn’t an option for me.  As a young Hispanic man, I faced all kinds of racism and knew there would be very little work for me, all of which included heavy labor. I pushed through and eventually saved up enough money to build a family with the love of my life. That girl was your grandmother
