My ’70s Zing!

by Lady RuNett, October 2, 2018 — Memories can be sweet and bring on mellow feelings. But sometimes there are memories that make you put on your music full blast and dance.

Back in the 60’s, I remember thinking how silly the girls were who screamed, cried and chased after singers like The Beatles. It wasn’t until years later, I found out that that some of them were paid. There would be about a half dozen or so who were paid to scream and holler at the singers until they got the rest of the fans to join the frenzy. Then everybody would chase the group or the singer to their plane or to the theater. I promised myself I would never be that crazy, especially if a guy is spending the money for us to attend the show.

Fast forward to the ’70s and his grown person fell in love with a singing group called the Trammps. They did a remix of the old classic “Zing Went the Strings of My Heart” and that’s exactly what mine did— went ZING!

Yes, I liked The Temptations, the Four Tops, The Supremes, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles and even some jazz and R&B singers like Lou Rawls, Dinah Washington, Jerry Butler and Sam Cooke BUT when The Trammps came along, they got my full attention. I truly became a Disco Baby!

No, I still didn’t scream, holler or cry like the crazy girls but you could compare me to some of the fans you saw in the movie, The Five Heartbeats. I had never been a groupie in my life but if The Trammps did a concert or a guest spot on TV, I was right there and chances are, I was the one who informed others.

I have never met any of the members but if I could, that would go on my list of things to do. I loved their music, their sense of style and the fashions. I even designed a few outfits for some male stripper/friends of mine based on The Trammps outfits but that’s another story for another time.

There’s only one other group I followed with gusto and I probably know more about them (than The Trammps) and that’s The Whispers, And The Beat Goes On.
