Morning Milk Deliveries

By George Williamson, April 13, 2019 — When I was little, my family owned a small dairy farm with a few cows so mornings started early around my house. It was during the [Great] Depression and times were hard. I remember eating navy bean sandwiches and mustard sandwiches because we didn’t have anything else. There were a lot of mouths to feed in our house and handouts weren’t acceptable. We wore our shoes until there were holes in them because we couldn’t afford new ones. My mother came from Germany at 16 years of age and my father was of German heritage and he was a hard, strict man. Honestly, I was afraid of him but, I loved being with him on early morning milk deliveries even though I was tired and cold. Nothing came easy back then. We worked for what we had and often did without. It made me strong and gave me a sense of responsibility, purpose, and developed in me a strong work ethic which I passed onto my own children.
