Meeting Anna

By Maureen Duncan, April 21, 2019 — When Aunt Anna was pregnant [with] Micheal she had toxemia so she had to be bedridden. Now her friend, Mary, (Aunt Mary who just died) would go over there every day and take care of her because she had two older children that had to go to school. So after school, Mary’s daughter Rosalie and I, we had been friends since first grade. So we would go over to Anna’s house because Rosalie’s mother would be there, we would say, “Did she have the baby yet, did she have the baby yet?” Every day we went over there wanting this baby. We were thirteen at the time. So finally Anna had the baby and then I started babysitting for Micheal when I was thirteen. And that’s really how I got to know Aunt Anna. I used to watch the three boys. And that was my story about how I met Aunt Anna. And then we became really good friends. At the beginning, she was more like a mother but then we were friends and we hung out. And then when I moved to Lakewood, her and Uncle Tony would start coming down every weekend. And that’s how our friendship grew. And I think of her, really, as a mother, a second mother.
