By Yn Shiou Lin, April 15, 2019 — In 1950, in the agricultural society of Taiwan at that time, marriage relied on the life of the parents and the words of the matchmaker. At the time, I was 18 years old. Through the introduction of my aunt, the meeting of the parents, to marriage, I only saw the person I was arranged to be married to twice. The women at that time were able to accept this life. They had no choice but to “marry the chicken [with] the chicken and marry the dog with the dog.” My husband was a public servant who works at a middle school. On the second day of our marriage, he rode on his bicycle and carried my luggage. We rode 32 miles to the place where he worked, and we lived in the school dormitory. After a little over a year, my husband received a letter of conscription. He had to serve in the military service. I moved back to live with my father-in-law and my mother-in-law. When I was pregnant, my husband was not at home, and the days were very hard. After two years and three months, he finally came back! Back to school, we have lived a happy and happy life.
