Casting My Vote & Exercising My Faith

By Lady Gray,  May 15, 2018 — There are 3 things on my mind today: go vote (primary election), attend this workshop (Best Day) and go to the gas company (PGW) about my humongous bill.

When I went to my designated polling place, people that I’ve seen during the voting years, greeted me like family. They asked about my sons who grew up around many of them. One or two of them even “mothered” my boys when they were young, sending them home with a word of chastisement or a warning if they were caught doing something they “had no business doing.” Trust and believe, I heard about it by the time they got home.

The hard part about seeing some of those nice folks came when I had to inform them that my mother and my husband had passed away. They were so used to seeing us come to vote together that seeing me by myself made them ask if my mom or my husband were coming later, no, not this time.

For the first time, one of the volunteers had to explain how the “write-in” ticket works on the machine. It was truly interesting and I’m sure I will be using it more often after this. At the end of that lesson and my voting, she confided that one of my books really helped her through some challenging times and a tough illness. It was a blessing to hear, considering my own issues at this time. Her words took my mind off of some of them and it was really encouraging.

I found the same volunteer outside talking to another volunteer about her current pain and how difficult it was to move early in the morning and late at night. I felt led at that moment to pray for her because I know that no matter what doctors believe, God has the final say. We shared another moment of smiles and tears and then I left.

It was good to receive a blessing through her words to me and to in turn be a blessing to her. Sometimes the things we do out of responsibility reap bigger rewards than we can imagine in other ways. In spite of the rain today, I see blue skies.
