Be Fit at Any Age

By Ruth Martin, October 28, 2014 — At age fifty, I decided to try a personal trainer. In twelve weeks, she had re-sculpted a body losing its shape due to poor fitness. As time went on, old habits returned, and so did the old body shape.  I confess I love sweets, and they are my downfall.

After promising myself I would do better, and after seven more years of making New Year’s resolutions to become more fit, I have done something about it. For the past four weeks, I have been walking for one hour (early in the morning) three days a week at the Museum of Science and Industry. My neighbor and I go to the sixth floor and walk around the entire space eight times, which equals two miles.

I have met some wonderful people of different backgrounds, ages, and occupations. Many are retired from professional careers. We chat along the way, stop occasionally to meet someone new, or bump into an old friend not seen for some time. Everyone is fully focused on completing their personal fitness goal. One of the most inspiring walkers is a ninety-seven-year-old woman, who proves that you can be well and fit at any age.
