A Tale of South Philly

By Linda R., January 26, 2020 — Something that I did when I was a teenager — when I was really like 15 or 16 maybe – I think it was about that age – I was going to Bandstand and my boyfriend at the time decided we were gonna [walk]. We didn’t have any money so we couldn’t take the subway so we were going to walk home from 46th and Market all the way down to South Philly. That’s pretty long. That’s really far. So he decided what he was going to do was, he said: “How about if we bum money along the way and we try to get something to eat or get on the subway or whatever?”

So we bummed money from 46th and Market all the way down to South Philly. I can’t remember how much it was. I just thought it was such a funny thing. Back then I was embarrassed but now I think it’s like…funny and really silly. [This was] dangerous also at this time. We got a lot of money. I don’t remember what we did with it. I really don’t. I just remember the act of doing that and walking all the way from 46th and Market to South Philly which is FAR.
