A Sunday Full of Surprises

By Lady Gray, September 27, 2016 — It was Resurrection Sunday (some people call it Easter) and my husband and I were preparing for church. We always joked about going to the “fashion show” since some people who have not been to church all year came on Easter Sunday just so everyone else could see their new clothes. They usually want to be seen and after all the fashions have been displayed, they disappear yet again.
My sons had arranged with my husband to surprise me. Since they are all grown with their own families, I truly was surprised to see them with their families as they entered the church and sat with us. Our pastor surprised us too. He selected three people to come up and make remarks or do what he called a reflective reading and provide their own thoughts. One of the people he selected was Tony, my oldest son. My son was also surprised to be called upon but he did not disappoint. He spoke about how heroic it was when one lays down their life for a friend. He made reference to September 11th, 2001 and gave brief examples of some brave, heroic people who died that day. First responders and others who tried to rescue people stranded. Others made the tough decision to stay with people who for one reason or another could not or would not be rescued and some of those people were complete strangers. He said these people were truly the most courageous. He said, “It is one thing to lay down one’s life for a friend or a loved one but to sacrifice your life for a stranger, is truly the ultimate act of courage.” He then tied that to Jesus and described how He gave His life for us, people He knew before we even knew ourselves.” When Tony finished, the congregation applauded. I am pretty sure I was wearing a “Proud Mama” grin.
After church, my husband took me to Joe’s Crab Shack. The food was great but I’m sorry to say I cannot remember what I ordered. The reason my brain went into shut-down was that at dinner, Nick, my loving husband presented me with a shut-my-mouth present as in chocolate. No, you don’t eat it, you wear it, as in d-i-a-m-o-n-d-s. Wow! Talk about a best day ever, indeed.
