Typhoons and Deserts

By William Zack, August 9, 2017 — When I was in the Marine Corps, in the summer, we had a typhoon that tore down our building. It was between 90 and 100 degrees and I was outside with a cutting torch, separating the metal. It was hot! I had a choice to pick where I wanted to serve, so I picked Twentynine Palms California, so they shipped me out there. The base was in the Mojave Desert, and there was a bunch of tents. It wasn’t even open yet. That was in 1951. Now the largest Marine base is on the West Coast. They were building Disneyland at that time, we would go over there and watch them dig the holes. It wasn’t even open yet.
