The Front of the Bus

By Carlotta Fareira, January 20, 2015 – All aboard! My grandsons and I were going to Plymouth Meeting Mall. They were 7, 6 and 2 ½ years old at the time. We were going to ride the “L” SEPTA bus. They were watching excitedly for the bus. “Here it comes,”  said Phoenix, the oldest.

I helped them onto the bus. It was a task with all three. When I finally stepped onto the bus, they were all immediately seated in the first row of seats. Phoenix announced, “Grandmom, we are sitting in the front of the bus like Rosa Parks did!” I smiled and said, “That’s right.”  When I looked up and perused the passengers, they were smiling and nodding their heads. I felt warm all over. I had read them a story about the Montgomery, Alabama Bus Boycott.

Often, we wonder how much young children understand about the stories we share with them. They are fascinated with language especially if you act out the events. Read to…Talk to…Take to…and Give to… (your children and grandchildren) and they will carry the treasures forward.
