The Day My Mother Died

By Moopy, October 28, 2014 — I awoke that morning in November, a breezy, warm fall day. I was wondering about how my mother was feeling. She had leukemia. She wanted to come home from the hospital since the doctors had told her there was nothing else that they could do for her but keep her comfortable. So, she was at home, sleeping, in her own bed. My sister called me at about 11:00am and told me to come see mom. She wasn’t herself, at all. So, in the car I go. I lived in Miller, IN at the time. It would take me, on a normal day, about a half an hour to get to Harvey, IL. So, I got onto I80 to go to Chicago and instantly regretted it as the traffic was backed up from a car accident.

I was able to drive, slowly down, thru the traffic, as tears started to run down my face. Then I got to Calumet Ave and the traffic completely stopped. Trucks, cars, and everything was just sitting on I80. It was a mess. I was feeling stressed and anxious to see my mom. It was a bad feeling coming over me. The traffic started moving and inching along down the highway. Two hours had passed. And it finally started moving.

I drove so fast, trying to see my mom. And by the time I got to the house, she had passed, about 15 minutes earlier.
