Spirit of My Father

By Nancy Lyons, August 2, 2017 — My father was a sailor and his ship got shot down in World War II. Another ship came and they went down to see if they could find any survivors, and he was one of them. I don’t know if they found any more, but they found my father. The war affected him negatively, he threatened to shoot my mother and me. He ended up shooting himself.  I was a daddy’s girl, and I tried to talk him out of it, so that was very dramatic for me. My parents had been in the process of getting divorced. I tried to talk him out of it and I couldn’t, so I ran out onto the back porch and then I heard the gunshot. Once when I was 15 years old, I woke up screaming. My mother came running and asked me what was the matter, and I told her that dad was standing at the foot of the bed. I felt as if it was his spirit and he wanted to make sure that I was okay. So that was a dramatic thing for me. I had nightmares about my father, but not anymore.

Another story is that I went to the casino and gambled with my aunt on my 61st birthday. I had only brought $40 to use, but I left with $500! I won on the penny machines.
