My First Day of School

By Grace Matthews, September 15, 2015 — Before my first day of school in kindergarten (when I was five years old), my mother sat with me (well because she wouldn’t stay) and she told me to not let nobody come and take me home (but her). Finally the class was dismissed to go home. So I stood where the teacher had placed me (so that my mom would pick me up). Well, you know I had my sister and brother that went to school with me.

First my sister came to pick me up. I said, “No, mommy is going to pick me up.” I was very stubborn. She tried and my brother tried. I said, “No, mommy is going to pick me up.” Well, there was nobody but me standing there waiting (for my mom). Finally, my mom arrived and said, “What is wrong with you girl?” I said that she told me that she would pick me up and don’t let nobody else. She became angry and gave me a spanking. I just didn’t understand why she did that. Later, as I had gotten bigger, she told me that she meant that my sister or brother could have picked me up (but nobody else). Today, I laugh about that!
