My Dog Ginger

By Nancy Lyons, August 9, 2017 — I had a dog, and it was an albino Irish dog. Her name was Ginger. One day I was lost. My mom had called the state and local police to look for me. Well, I was in the doghouse with Ginger! I was all curled up down to sleep with my dog! She said, “Don’t you ever do that to me again!”  Ginger had six babies. My mom wanted to sell Ginger and all the puppies except for one,  and let me pick which one I wanted to keep. I told her I wanted to keep Ginger! She was my dog!

My parents used to go square dancing, and I was at home by myself one day. I was about 11 or 12 years old. There was a state policeman who used to live across the street from us. Ginger got up and walked into the kitchen and I followed her, and I turned on the light and we saw a man in the kitchen. I said, “My mom didn’t cook you any food and my dad’s clothes don’t fit you!” I was kind of shaken. Ginger stood right in between the both of us. I reached for the phone, and then he reached for my hand, and then Ginger went right for his throat! He kept yelling, get her off me! I said, “Down Ginger!” He said, “The hell with you!” Then he ran out the door. They had a corn field where we lived and that’s where the police found him. He had escaped from prison. He and six others had escaped. From then on, my parents took me square dancing with them.
