Guns For Cash

By Agnes Collado, January 19, 2019 — Back in the day, there was a campaign to end gun violence. On the radio, they’d have ads that said, “If you find a gun, bring it to the police and we’ll give you a $50 gift card. No questions asked.”

I thought, “That’d be useful,” and I went through the house looking for guns. I went into my son’s room and there in a bag in his closet was a gun. I couldn’t believe it. I called my friend Terry and asked her to come with me down to the station. We both went in the car, I put the bag in, and I didn’t tell her anything at first.

Then I said, “Terry, there’s a gun in that bag. There’s a gun in that bag.” And she said, “Oh sh*t.”
She decided to keep the gun in the bag and hold it in her lap so it wouldn’t go off by accident, but she told me if we got pulled over, she’d blame me. So we went to the police station at 24th and Wolf, we gave the gun to the police officer and he said, “Thank you.”
I asked the officer, “Do we get a $50 gift card?”
The officer said, “Ma’am, this is a BB gun.”
We never got that gift card.
