Good Morning – what a great day – a day for loving.
Loving one another and loving the land. You know, love is no short
term memory.
It’s a special cultivar of peony – give it a little care and it blooms
a long time –
Like the forty-five years Ruby and I had.

I am so grateful to you all for the lovely tribute to my sweet
partner.
A beautiful edible garden that she would have delighted to use in her
middle-east cooking.
Ruby’s kitchen was a truly tasty edible education.
And Ruby was a gardener – her prize harvest was a many-seasoned crop
of Chicago Public School students.
Thirty years of sowing the heirloom seeds of knowledge…and she had
The “white thumb” (chalk-stained) to show her effort.

Now thanks to you patient composters, you muscular mulchers, puissant planters and caring reapers,
when the sun warms this bountiful space, I will know that it’s also
Shining on the essence of Ruby’s spirit.
And in that spirit your creativity and courage and concern have
brought us together to nurture that delicate urban eden we call
neighborhood.

We all know it’s easier to dance with music and we’re learning that
it’s easier to live well when we eat safe, nutritious, sustainable
food.

Thank you.
