Apple Surprise

By Shirley Cullison, October 2014 — I remember trick or treating as a child, and while there were some candy treats, we were mostly the proud owners of a bag full of assorted fruits and nuts! My brothers and sisters and I would sit for hours with my grandmother, cracking open walnuts. I can still remember how upset my grandma would get when she had worked hard to get a walnut open, only to have the edible part crack along with the shell! Hearing this sweet, elderly Christian woman spouting a few choice words made us laugh and was as much of a treat for us as the goody bag!

I also remember going to a Halloween party where we bobbed for apples and the Dad telling us to chew slowly as the apples had an extra treat inside! I found FIFTY CENTS!! Makes me laugh now, but then it was a FORTUNE! I’m also glad I wasn’t too hungry and didn’t swallow my treasure!
