One of my very first jobs was as an elevator attendant at Lipman’s department store. I suppose there were stairs to take, but then you missed the adventure of my trying, and invariably failing, to bring the car to a stop that was level with the floor! Many of the experienced operators could actually call out what was available at every floor, “3rd floor, children’s shoes”, etc. If I would have not been so timid, I might have said, “3rd floor, well almost, you’re going to have to jump down about 2 feet”, but I was simply embarrassed and did not stay in that position for very long!
